p90x Legs and Back

Legs and back workout is really a good one and not so strenuous that it is hard to keep up on. Be expecting a lot of pullups in this workout. I think this session has more pull ups then any of the other ones do.

Overall I like leg and back day it is a pretty functional workout. Its not going bulk you like heavy squatting at the gym, but it will give you some functional strength.

The first time I did P90X, I was pretty darn sore, this time I thought it would be better because I have been lifting in the gym.

Well its not!

The upper body is sore, which just goes to show you that P90x really does work muscles that you can miss out in the gym. I think it is all the push ups and struggling to do pull ups, those little muscles get worked more. Really Day 1 of p90x the chest and back is one of the toughest workouts in my opinion.

What hurts:
-Chest
-Shoulders
-Biceps
-upper back
-lats
-tiny muscles that I had forgotten about

I was sore all morning and then I hit up Day 2 P90x, which is Pylo and my muscles started warming up. About an hour after the workout though, the soreness returned now its just not in the upper body but also in lower.

I really forgot how much the week 1 of p90x can really hurt ya!

Day 1 P90x
Chest and Back ANDDDD AB RIPPER X

Day 1 always a struggle

Whenever you start any fitness plan or diet there is always day 1. It is a good day to see what needs work, where you are strong and where you are weak.

Having some base fitness down before starting p90x
So the last couple months I have been biking and lifting weights at the gym, so I didn’t let myself totally go and I actually felt okay on todays workout. The first time I did p90x I hadn’t lifted in over a year and I struggled on doing any push-ups off my knees. Today I could easily do 10-15 off the knees on most of the push ups. So at least I haven’t been loosing much strength. Now I see perks to going into P90x with some fitness base planted you can keep up and work harder, hopefully getting better results.

The Ab Ripper X is still a B*tch! Its not my favorite and adds on to the total amount of time so even when you get done with the main workout your can’t really celebrate. And three days of week of it, is kinda of overkill, but I’ll stick with it.

What to Expect
Expect a lot of push ups with day one.

It Never Feels Better then Saying Day 1 DONE!

Motivational Fitness Quote
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”

Okay so I have decided to do a little p90x while I wait for my new workout THE INSANITY WORKOUT also by beach body and Shaun T.

I like p90x though, I think it is one of the best at home workout outs, not only the moves but Tony Horton himself makes it a good experience.

I thought about doing p90x all over again, but I’m just to tempted to try the Insanity workout, which is a 60 day program and looks pretty sweet!

In the meantime though I’m going get back to doing a little p90x, I’m going to follow the program until I have the Insanity workout and then I’m going to just do maybe the P90x Yoga and maybe one of the strength DVDs.

Working out is
All about getting in shape for me, that may mean switching up programs adding and subtracting some things. The point of most workouts including p90x is to get fit and get used to working your body every day. If a workout program doesn’t seem fun or I don’t think I’m putting in the best effort, then that tells me one thing, switch it up. It is not an excuse to quit working out, but to find a new activity to do, so I can keep progressing my strength and fitness levels.

Breaking Workout Rules

It is fun to follow a fitness plan and accomplish what you set out to do, but really think about a workout plan before you start it and see how it works with your lifestyle. You may have to break the rules and guidelines that some programs set up for you and rearrange the workouts to fit you day.

Some people get really amazing results doing p90x while others don’t. This probably is because the people who are getting the results, love the workout and are really pushing themselves, while the others are just going through the motion and watch the clock through the whole video.

Although I think there are good parts to P90x and I do intend to incorporate some of the videos into my week, I’m really ready to try something else like the Insanity Workout and some heavy lifting at the gym.

But until my new videos come I’ll be dusting off the p90x weights!

So a couple months ago I made a quick list of things to get done before I was 30 years old. I only had about two months to get the items done, so I did not get everything accomplished, but some things are better than nothing. Here is another look at the list and what went down.

1. Mountain bike at least 4 different spots in CA (This is one of the things that i keep putting off, there is so much great trail riding to be done here and I want to experience some of it) GOT THIS ONE DONE! Biked Sweetwater, Florida Canyon, Mission Trails and Tri Canyon.

2. Learn to ride a skate board ( I have pretty much wanted to do this since I was 8 years old, better late then never…even though I’m sure it will be embarrassing.) CHECK! Bought A Sector 9 Skate board and started practice riding it.

3. Do a running trail race (I want to start trail running, it so fun getting of the road, so I decided what better way to motivate me then to sign up for a trail race) FAIL! Never gotta around to doing this, p90x and Mountain biking took up too much time.

4. Hike anzaborrego desert state park (This is suppose to be a really sweet state park in Southern CA, I wanted to go there last time I lived here, but never did, this time I’m going to do it) NOPE, never got around to driving all the way out there from San Diego.

5. Read an adventure novel (Outside and Adventure magazine are always publishing the top classic adventure novels to read, I always go down the list and think I want to read one of these, but never do….what am I waiting for!) FAIL again Ha, this one was just due to complete laziness, I have no great excuses for failing this one.

6. Volunteer for beach clean up (I really believe you shouldn’t just take from a place that you live and have fun at, you should give too) Sad to Say Nope.

7. Learn to ride a dirt bike (Basically another thing I have wanted to do since I was 8, I’m sure I’ll be in class with a bunch of teenagers, should be fun!) No! I really wanted to do this but the classes were too expensive to take right now.

8. Do first two months of P90x (P90x is video workout, supposedly it pretty hardcore, I have had the videos for awhile but the plan is 90 days….so I always find an excuse not to do them…I figure if I start today I can get the first two months done and then easily finish the third one all before summer…no more excuses….I will blog about my experience with this program) Partial Pass! I got about 40 some days into the program and then I caught a cold that hung on for a couple weeks, kinda made me push pause for awhile, then when I felt better I started really getting into Mt Biking. Great program, plan to finish it off shortly.

9. Get on a healthy balanced diet (Traveling makes you eat crappy, living on fast food and erratic meal times makes me feel like crud, but is an hard habit to break, I want to start eating balanced small meals through the day. I will keep a food diary to keep on track and get balanced eating plan) YES! For Two months I kept a food journal and ate in balance; So many carbs, proteins, fats a day.

10. Do 8 solid pull ups (I used to pump out pull ups all the time, but not lifting weights or hitting the gym very often has weakened me, right now I can’t do ONE. So I came up with the number 8; five seemed to easy and 10 felt to hard.) NO! I think I would have got a lot closes to this goal if I would have finsihed off p90x I started the program, by doing no pullups to being able to pump out three solid ones.

Recovering but for sure missed out on some videos, not sure what I will do, maybe take the videos I missed-Legs and back/Plyo and Kenpo and add them onto the recover week or just add another full week and then do the recovery week not sure yet. Since it is only three workouts I prob could add them on and then just recover the rest of the week.

Onto PHASE 2:

Day 29 P90x
Chest, Shoulder &Tricep/ Ab Ripper x
Sore level upon waking-0
So this is a new video for the week and I thought it was just okay. I like the Chest workout from Phase 1 a little better. But maybe it is just because I know all moves now. I sorta thought there was too much shoulder in this one.
Ab Ripper X is getting more fluid and goes smoothly now.

Day 30
Plyometrics
Sore level upon waking-2
Shoulders sore this morning from yesterday. I can’t say much about today’s workout; just that I’m always thrilled when it is over. It was complete torcher for me to stay INSIDE and do this video when it is Blue Skies and 74 degrees!

Day 31
Back N Bicep+ Ab Ripper X
Sore level upon waking- 2
Ohhhhh I like this workout! Tons of Bicep……Love it!

Day 32
Yoga X
Soreness upon waking- 4
Feeling a bit sore all over today. Body probably still adjusting to the new workouts. So I guess it was a good day for Yoga. Got it done and do feel a bit better now, for some reason I always seem to feel sleepy after this workout.

Day 33
Leg N Back and Ab Ripper X
Soreness upon waking-0
Was feeling pretty good when I woke up this morning so went for a jog and then came in and did the P90x Workout….Legs were really feeling. Overall Good day! So far have been staying on workout track for the week!

Day 34
Soreness upon waking-2
Rest Day

Day 35
Kenpo
Soreness upon waking-0
Bought a New Kayak today, got out and hit up some paddle time, hopefully shoulders won’t get to sore.
I was tired but still fit in Kenpo and I do think it may be the funniest workout video in the p90x series! Moving on to week 6 tomorrow!

Well This is A Recovery week, the videos are suppose to be:

Monday-Yoga
Tuesday-Core Synergistics
Wednesday-Kenpo
Thursday-Stretch
Friday-Core Synergistics
Saturday-Yoga
Sunday-Stretch or Rest

I was feeling restless before the week even started, I looked at the weather and saw every day was sunny and in the 70s! I decided to try and just do my workout however I wanted to, which means I mostly went Mt Biking and running this week. But I think it was good that I got to do some of that, because now I’m really ready to start phase 2 week 5 and really focus on it!

Here is what my week looked like:

Recovery Week

Day 22 P90x
Sore level upon waking-0
Today is supposed to be Yoga, but it was so beautiful out I went for a run. I’ll prob. Tray to get outside as much as possible this week, since the workouts are light for p90x. I feel like I need some cardio.

I’ll probably hit up one yoga, but I’m not going do the recommended 3! Although the other day when I was doing downward dog I almost got my heels to touch the ground.

Day 23
Sore level upon waking-0
Today was suppose to be core synergistics but I had a headache and had to take a recover day! Now I gotta push everything off by a day. ☹

Day 24
Core Synergistics
Sore level upon waking- 0
Headache was pretty much gone, but after missing the last couple days of working out, I almost talked myself into just quitting all together on the program. But instead I pushed play. Video was okay, the only thing I didn’t like was how many workouts made you roll around on the floor.

Glad I decided not to quit, everything just feels off this week.

Day 25
Soreness upon waking- 2
Went Mt biking today, just shuffling the whole week around, it’s all screwy. I can’t help wanting to get outside it is just so nice out!

Day 26
Soreness upon waking- 1
Had good intentions to do Kenpo today but went for another MT bike ride…..It was a tough day, turned into a 3 hour hilly ride…..maybe should of just stuck to Kenpo!

Day 27
Soreness upon waking-2
Worn down from riding yesterday took a full recovery day.

Day 28
Soreness upon waking-2
Well took another recovery day…..didn’t get many videos accomplished this week, got outside a lot. But now on Monday I’ll be ready to start phase 2 and stay focused on the workouts now I got some of the outdoor things out of my system.

Ready to Bring it on Phase 2!

Day 15 P90x
Chest Back and Ab Ripper X
Sore level upon waking-0
Did the double workout today went for a run and hit the p90x.
Felt really solid on my run today, not out of breath. So I guess those plyometrics must be doing something.

P90 was solid today I put if off till 7pm and ate a string cheese before, cheese and working out don’t go together.

Anywas I switched I started doing the pushups off my knees I could easily hit between 10-15 off the knees then I would usually do about 10 on the knees. I big jump from the first two weeks.

The pull-ups doing seem to be progressing as fast, still struggle to do one on my own and then I use a chair to do them, but this way just feels awkward. I switched it up and did the chair and then did ten or 15 more reps with the band. My goal is to do 8 pull ups by the 60th day, but now I’m not sure if that is going happen.

I’ll just have to keep working it and see what happens!

Day 16
Plyometrics
Sore level upon waking-3.5
Got it done, still my least favorite, though I know it works. Pretty much kept focus all the way though, didn’t loose it halfway through like the last couple times, made it to the end feeling A Ok. Pretty tired and starving by the “bonus” round!

Day 17
Shoulder arms and ab ripper x
Sore level upon waking- 4.5
Sore when I woke this morning, the calves hurt and the upper body still tight from Chest and Back.

P90 went good today, felt strong.

Ready to move onto some new videos though, glad next week is recovery and then onto phase 2.

Day 18
Yoga
Soreness upon waking- 2
Today Was Yoga x I didn’t hesitate on this one, because I can easily make excuses to skip it, if I put it off. So I got first thing and got it done.

Anyhow I like the way I feel after yoga, its just I don’t really like the video much and find myself looking at the clock often. I don’t mind doing this video like every other week would be cool.

Anyways feels good to have day 18 done and early in the day too!

Day 19
Leg Back Ab ripper
Soreness upon waking- 0
Got It doneeeee! YAY! Can’t wait to switch stuff up next week is recover for me and then phase 2.

Day 20
Mountain bike
Soreness upon waking-1
Instead of taking a rest day this weekend, I decided to get some cardio and do some trail riding, it was great getting outside and doing something different.

Day 21
Kenpo
Soreness upon waking-0
Got this one done early in the morning, so I can have the day free! Went Fine, ready to switch it up a bit though!

WOW 21 days done, feels like is going faster now.

Day 8 P90x
Chest Back and Ab Ripper X
Sore level upon waking-2
For some reason I felt more sore when I started the video, then when I woke up this morning. Maybe I didn’t realize how sore my arms actually were. It was a rough day, I did feel much better than last Monday though.

The Abs weren’t hurting though so I really Brought it on Ab Ripper X- I feel stronger each times I do this video.

Day 9
Plyometrics
Sore level upon waking-1
This is the hardest workout if you ask me. The first time I did it I started to peter out and loose focus have way through, this time I made it a little bit past half way maybe between 36 and 40 minutes. I start loosing focus and the workout concentration. I don’t if it is just because I’m tired or what.

Anyways I’m always glad when this one is done, I still think it is a good workout. Hopefully by the end I can make it through and stay focused. Then I will know I have progressed!

Day 10
Shoulder arms and ab ripper x
Sore level upon waking-1
Feeling less sore every morning! Which I don’t mind because I can bring it harder doing the workouts! Maybe I’ll move my weights up next week. Currently I’m using 5lbs and 8lbs depending on the lift
Shoulder and arms is still the best video in my opinion. I just love all the moves in it, very solid arm workout!
Ab Ripper X was a bit rough today for some reason I was really feeling in the hip flexors.

Feels so good to have my days be in the double digits!

Day 11
Yoga
Soreness upon waking- 0
Well Today was supposed to be Yoga X- but I skipped and went trail riding instead. I felt a tad guilty about it, but I still got in an hour of riding so not that bad.
I don’t hate the yoga or love it. I just really wanted to bike so I did.
I don’t want to get so obsessed with the videos, that when they end I don’t know what to do with my time. So some days I just need to get an outside workout. That way when P90x comes to an end I’m used to doing other things as well. This doesn’t mean I want to be skipping videos all time, because I don’t want to follow through with the program, but every once in awhile I may replace one of the workouts with a solid outdoor session.
This video is getting me were I want to get though and that is to make working out a daily thing in my life.
I was thinking of doing the stretch workout on Sunday, just to see how it compares to the yoga.
Oh good news I ran up a fight of stairs today and didn’t run out of breath! YAY!

Day 12
Leg Back Ab ripper
Soreness upon waking-0
Got the video done….not much to say other then it went fine.

Day 13
Rest
Soreness upon waking 2
Suppose to do Kenpo today but had too much going on so moved it to Sunday.

Day 14
Kenpo
Soreness upon waking-0
Brought it on Kenpo today really good workout. I splurged a little on my diet yesterday, first time in 13 days I did that. So either I was feeling guilty or the extra calories gave me more energy, maybe I bit of both. Either way I really worked it today. Good workout, I like Kenpo for a cardio workout.
